SKU:2022 | Adelaide Hills | Pinot Noir

Description

This is special sparkling wine that has been blended with 23 vintages, including those that have been on lees in the bottle for 23 years. Ranging from 1997 (the very first year that the Henschke's set out to make sparkling) to 2020.

Pale straw-gold with green hues. Fragrant aromas of citrus blossom and white peach are complemented by creamy notes of almond, toasted brioche and shortcrust pastry. A generous and complex palate of white nectarine, grapefruit pith, crème brûlée and roasted cashew are beautifully balanced by crisp, mineral acidity and a very fine bead for a long, fresh finish.

Image of a wine bottle with a label that reads HENSCHKE, Johann's Garden, BLANC DE NOIR MD, Lenswood Adelaide Hills, MULTI-VINTAGE DISGORGED. The bottle has a tapered design with a dark grey foil cap. The upper part of the bottle is clear, showing the golden yellow wine inside, while the label at the bottom has a deep grey background with white and light grey text. A small emblem and the text 'EST. 1868' indicate the winery's long history, and a line at the bottom celebrates 50 years

Rumour has it that the Henschke's wanted a sparkling for Christmas lunch and this was the initial reason in 1997 this wine was originally made. True or not, what we get is a sparkling that has been blended with 23 vintages, including those that have been on lees in the bottle for 23 years.

About this Wine

In 1997, Stephen and Prue embarked on a journey to handcraft an ultra-premium sparkling wine from pinot noir and selected only the finest fruit from specific clones and sites suited for this purpose at the Henschke Lenswood Vineyard.
The vineyard contains some of the oldest pinot noir vines in the Adelaide Hills. The first release in 2008 celebrated Henschke’s 140th anniversary. This limited seventh release is a blend of exceptional vintages all matured on tirage for up to 23 years. It is a true expression of its site and celebrates 155 years of Henschke family winemaking.
This sparkling is named as a tribute to adored matriarch Johanne Ida Selma, whose grandfather Nicolaus Stanitzki planted the first vines on the Hill of Grace Vineyard. Selma married third-generation winemaker Paul Alfred Henschke in 1907, entwining the family histories for all time. The youngest of Selma and Alfred’s twelve children, Cyril became the fourth-generation Henschke winemaker.

Winemaker's Notes

100% Pinot Noir grown on the Henschke Lenswood Vineyard in the Adelaide Hills, managed with organic and biodynamic practices.

Maturation:
Hand-selected Pinot Noir was whole-bunch pressed, settled, cool fermented and underwent malolactic fermentation; the wine was subsequently bottle fermented and left on lees in bottle to age. Multiple vintages from 1997 to 2018 were combined in an assemblage-style blend in December 2022, as a multi-vintage, mature disgorged blanc de noir. The wine is sealed under a stainless steel closure to allow the wine to knit together and retain its bottle-age complexity.
