Purple Hands Wines – A Boutique Barossa Gem
Purple Hands Wines is a passion project that grew into one of Barossa’s most respected boutique wineries. Founded in 2006 by winemaker Craig Stansborough and his friend Mark Slade, the winery started with just over a tonne of handpicked Shiraz, crushed in Craig’s shed. From these humble beginnings, Purple Hands has evolved into an award-winning producer known for its terroir-driven approach and small-batch craftsmanship.
The Story Behind the Name
The name “Purple Hands” is a nod to the winemaking process – the deep, vibrant stains left on hands after handling Shiraz grapes. It symbolises the hands-on approach that defines every bottle they produce. Their philosophy is simple: respect the vineyard, let the fruit shine, and create wines that reflect the best of the Barossa Valley.
Terroir and Winemaking Philosophy
Located in the southern Barossa Valley, the Stansborough Vineyard is the heart of Purple Hands Wines. This 32-acre vineyard is organically managed, with a focus on sustainability and minimal intervention. The red clay over limestone soil provides the perfect foundation for their signature Shiraz and Grenache. The winemaking approach follows the same philosophy – wild yeast fermentation, gentle oak aging, and a focus on balance and elegance over power.
