Scanlon Estate JMS Pinot Noir 2022

Scanlon Estate JMS Pinot Noir 2022

SKU:2022 | Adelaide Hills | Pinot Noir

Description

The pinnacle of Scanlon Pinot Noir – three barrels, zero compromise.

The Scanlon JMS Pinot Noir 2023 is handpicked from the very top of the family vineyard in the Piccadilly Valley, Adelaide Hills. Family and friends worked the rows, selecting only the finest bunches from the upper hillside blocks of high-density Abel, 667 and 115 clones – in some cases, just three tiny bunches per vine, each packed with flavour.

In the winery, 100% of the fruit was destemmed and fermented warm in wide stainless-steel fermenters to maximise skin contact. Extended maceration and prolonged time on skins built depth, structure and that dark, brooding core of fruit. The wine was then fermented and matured as separate parcels in François Frères French oak hogsheads for 11 months (just 14% new), before only three barrels were selected for the final blend.

The result is a powerful, Burgundian-styled Pinot Noir: deep red-purple in colour, with aromas of black cherry, raspberry, red plum, sweet spice, alpine herbs and faint clove. The palate is concentrated yet poised – silky and fine-boned, with a subtle pumice-like mineral grip and long, flowing acidity that carries the wine for what feels like minutes.

  • Vineyard: Upper hillside blocks, high-density Abel, 667 & 115 clones

  • Production: Only 3 barrels produced – extremely limited
  • Serving: Decant while young; ideal large Pinot or Burgundy glass
  • Food pairing: Roast duck, venison, mushroom dishes, truffle pasta

A Pinot of real substance and longevity – for collectors, serious Pinot fans and Shiraz drinkers looking for their “aha” Pinot moment.

The label is a sophisticated matte black with a golden, cursive signature that reads 'Scanlon' and the initials 'JSR' below in a lighter gold tone. The vintage year '2022' is discreetly placed in the bottom right corner of the label. The bottle's cap is black, matching the elegant and minimalistic aesthetic of the packaging.

Halliday Wine Companion – 94 Points

“A lot of nous and care behind this wine, and it shows. This is a hauntingly beautiful pinot noir, fine-boned, fresh-feeling, that sense of energy that parlays straight into an ephemeral notion of deliciousness and a nigh-on thirst-quenching nature. Red cherries, sweet spice, alpine herbs and faint clove seasoning are the order of the day – the bouquet and palate in accord. The texture is silky but has a fine, almost pumice-stone minerally grip, drawing the wine out exceptionally long. Elegant, refined, excellent.”
Mike Bennie for the James Halliday Wine Companion

Winemaker's Notes

Handpicked by relatives to ensure only the best bunches were picked, this wine comes from our best parcels in the vineyard. Soley from the top of the hill section of high density block Abel, 667 and 115. Some vines only produced 3 small bunches of intense flavour and concentration. In the winery, warmer fermentation temperatures in wide stainless-steel fermenters allowing extremely high skin to juice ratio for greater flavour extraction. Extended maceration and time on skins. Fermented and matured in French Francois Frere hogshead barrels separately until a month before bottling. A powerful wine made in the Burgundian style that rewards decanting while young.

Cellaring Recommendations

Decant for at least an hour if drinking in the first few years. Enjoy now for its intensity and structure, or cellar 10–12 years to see the tannins melt, the fruit turn darker and more savoury, and the Burgundian complexity really emerge.

Further Information About this Wine

The JMS Pinot Noir sits at the very top of the Scanlon range – a selection from the steepest, highest-density blocks of the family vineyard in Piccadilly Valley, close to 600m above sea level. These upper hillside rows are planted to Abel, 667 and 115 clones, chosen for their concentration and ability to handle serious winemaking without losing balance.
Handpicking by family and friends means every bunch is inspected and selected in the vineyard. With some vines yielding only three tiny bunches, the focus is on flavour, not volume. Warm fermentations in wide stainless-steel vessels create a high skin-to-juice ratio, while extended maceration and prolonged time on skins build the wine’s depth, tannin and trademark “pumice stone” grip.
After 11 months in François Frères hogsheads (just 14% new), only three barrels were deemed worthy of JMS. The finished wine is dark, brooding and powerful, with black cherry, raspberry, spice, undergrowth and fine mineral tannins. It’s a Pinot Noir for Burgundy lovers, serious collectors and anyone who wants to experience just how far Adelaide Hills Pinot can go.

About Scanlon Wines

Scanlon Wines is a family-run estate in the Piccadilly Valley subregion of the Adelaide Hills, with vines planted close to 600m above sea level. Winemaker Harry Scanlon grew up working the vineyard with his dad before honing his craft with mentors like Taras Ochota, Stephen George and Alex Trescowthick. Today, he makes the wines on the estate, focusing on organic-leaning viticulture, minimal intervention and obsessive attention to detail. The range now centres on two distinct Pinot Noirs – Estate and JMS – each expressing a different face of the family vineyard and Harry’s vision for serious, site-driven Adelaide Hills Pinot.

About Adelaide Hills Wine Region

Piccadilly Valley is one of the coolest, wettest and highest parts of the Adelaide Hills, and one of Australia’s premier regions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Steep slopes, sandstone and shale-based soils, and elevations up to 600m create long, cool growing seasons and naturally high acidity. Wines from Piccadilly tend to be perfumed, finely structured and age-worthy, with a distinct line of minerality. It’s a region that rewards hands-on vineyard work and sensitive, detail-focused winemaking – exactly the approach taken at Scanlon Wines.
