Description

The 2021 Shiraz from the esteemed Ebenezer sub-region of the Barossa Valley presents a captivating tapestry of flavours and aromas that are quintessential to its origin. In the glass, this wine displays a profound depth of colour, a luxurious purple hue with a rim that speaks of vitality and youth.

On the nose, a symphony of dark fruits greets the senses; ripe blackberries and plums are underscored by a hint of mocha and an elegant touch of oak that whispers of its time spent maturing in the finest French barrels for 18 months. Layers of spice, perhaps a suggestion of star anise and a pinch of white pepper, add complexity and allure.

The palate is a revelation of boldness and balance. It offers a generous full body that envelops the mouth with velvety tannins and a rich, ripe fruitiness that Barossa Shiraz is celebrated for. Underneath the immediate lushness, there is a precise structure, a line of acidity that carries the wine to an impressive length on the finish.

Secondary notes of liquorice, cedar and leather weave through the wine, leading to a finish that is both powerful and graceful. This Shiraz is a reflection of the Ebenezer terroir – robust yet refined, with a potential to age gracefully, developing greater nuances over time.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2021 Ebenezer Shiraz fruit was once again sourced from four Hoffmann DV blocks: Dallwitz-DW96 , Becker (Boundary of Ebenezer and Koonunga), David’s and Mickan block (watch out for this block, only established in 2016 but already in high demand, outstanding Barossa provenance). Hand-picked and destemmed into one tonne open fermenters. 10-15% of clusters were retained as whole bunch. Skin contact ranged from 12-14 days with an initial 72 hour cold soak. For something different this year half of the ferments were not inoculated and relied on indigenous yeast strains. The indigenous ferments were standouts for this vintage. 25% new French oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered in September 2022.
