95 Points – James Halliday Wine Companion. From Halliday’s Best Value Winery 2025, Mulline Chardonnay 2024 is a pitch-perfect cool-climate Chardonnay – saline, stone-fruited and seriously classy.

A blend of fruit from the Moorabool Valley, Barrabool Hills and Bellarine Peninsula, it opens with gentle aromas of white peach, nectarine, citrus zest and a hint of sea spray, layered with subtle toast and flint. The palate is simultaneously fleshy and taut: ripe stone fruit and lemon curd wrapped around a spine of bright acidity, creamy lees texture and beautifully integrated oak.

Fermented and matured in French oak barriques and hogsheads (around 10% new) with 20% malolactic fermentation, this Chardonnay walks the line between freshness and richness. It’s the kind of wine you buy by the case and enjoy over the next few years as it slowly unfurls more savoury, nutty complexity.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2024 Mulline Chardonnay is a fresh, vibrant expression of Geelong. Sourced from four vineyards across Sutherlands Creek (Moorabool Valley), Barrabool and Portarlington on the Bellarine Peninsula, and built from P58 and 1VI10 clones, it shows citrus, nectarine and ripe white peach with a gentle saline edge. Fermentation and maturation in a mix of old and new French oak barriques and hogsheads (10% new), with 20% of the wine undergoing malolactic fermentation, gives a fine balance of bright acidity, subtle oak spice and creamy texture. The finish is long, structured and beautifully poised.

Mulline Chardonnay 2024 is crafted from 100% Chardonnay grown across Geelong’s key sub-regions: Sutherlands Creek in the Moorabool Valley, Barrabool in the Barrabool Hills and Portarlington on the Bellarine Peninsula. This spread of sites brings together richness, structure and coastal freshness in one wine.
The blend uses two classic Chardonnay clones, P58 and 1VI10, which contribute both citrus drive and stone-fruit generosity. Fermentation and maturation take place in French oak barriques and hogsheads with only around 10% new oak, so the oak sits in the background, shaping the wine rather than dominating it.
Around 20% of the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and the whole blend spends time on lees, adding creamy texture, fine structure and savoury nuance while retaining bright acidity. The end result is a gently saline, stone-fruited Chardonnay with length, balance and a clear cool-climate feel – exactly the kind of white you can comfortably buy by the case.
