Silkman Shiraz Pinot Noir 2022

Silkman Shiraz Pinot Noir 2022

SKU:2022 | Hunter Valley | Shiraz Pinot Noir

Description

A refined red blend of lightness and structure. Silkman’s 2022 Shiraz Pinot Noir marries the elegance of Pinot with the drive of Shiraz, producing a wine of harmony and finesse.

Aromas of fresh blackberry, wild cherry and spice blossom open first. On the palate, layered notes of blackberry, red plum, earth spice and a touch of ironstone minerality reveal themselves, framed by lively acid and gentle tannins.

Fruit was fermented separately and gently co-blended, with selective oak maturation to enhance texture while preserving clarity and varietal identity.

95 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

"The cherry-infused palate is beautifully supple and perfectly ripe. Fruit is the undeniable hero, with seamless integration between the two varieties. Pinot makes up 30% of the blend, with the MV6 clone sourced from the Travertine Vineyard. 'Best's clone' shiraz is sourced from the Wills Hill Vineyard and displays natural elegance and intensity. The blend spends three months in oak, of which 40% is new, which sweetens and fills out the mid-palate, followed by three months in tank to preserve the primary fruit." - Toni Paterson for James Halliday Wine Companion

Winemaker's Notes

Blend Composition: 80% Shiraz, 20% Pinot Noir

Hand-harvested fruit; Shiraz fermented on skins before aging in French oak puncheons; Pinot Noir pressed early to preserve freshness; blended and bottled before the next summer to retain vibrancy.

"A fabulous traditional Hunter blend is making a comeback. You'll see why. Blueberries and spice with floral notes and undertones of cassis and dark cherries make this an extremely moreish wine." Liz Silkman

Further Information About this Wine

Silkman’s Shiraz Pinot Noir 2022 is an elegant exploration of contrast and balance. In warmer regions like the Hunter, Shiraz often dominates; here, Silkman leans into subtlety, lifting the palate with Pinot Noir brightness and weaving in structure and depth from the Shiraz. The moderate climate and vineyard choices allowed perfect ripeness for both components. Instead of maximal phenolics, the winemaking aimed for finesse: lower extraction, neutral oak, and preservation of aromatics. The resulting wine offers a layered journey—berries and spice up front, a mid-palate of forest floor and iron, then a lingering finish defined by acidity and texture. It’s versatile: drink now for freshness or age for mid-term complexity.

About Silkman Wines

Silkman Wines is a boutique Hunter Valley winery helmed by Liz and Shaun Silkman, with a strong focus on small-batch, high-integrity wines. Their aim is to express site, vintage and varietal expression rather than heavy manipulation. The Shiraz Pinot Noir is an ambitious blend in their portfolio, marrying the punch and structure of Shiraz with the aromatic lift and finesse of Pinot Noir. In a region known for powerful reds, this wine stands out with a luminous middle path—approachable now, but with enough undercurrent to evolve. The Silkmans wrest control in the vineyard and cellar, tuning their practices to each vintage and parcel. Their lineup—including Semillon, Chardonnay, Grüner, and red blends—shares a common thread: clarity, restraint and personality.
