Welland Barossa "Old Hands" Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Welland Barossa "Old Hands" Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

SKU:2021 | Barossa Valley | Cabernet Sauvignon

Description

Barossa Cabernet with history in the bottle. Some wines carry more than flavour. They carry place, people and time. The 2021 Welland Old Hands Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon is one of those wines.

The fruit comes from vines first planted in 1923 by one of the Barossa's founding families, from the last remaining section of the original Welland vineyard that has not been subdivided and built over. In a world always chasing the next new thing, this is a wine that reminds you experience still matters.

On the nose, it brings all the generosity you want from a proper Barossa red: red fruits, sweet spice and cedar, with cassis, a touch of green herbs and a layer of toasty oak. The palate is rich and inviting, unfolding with dark fruit, chocolate and jubey blackberry notes, supported by soft, well-integrated tannins and a smooth, generous finish.

This is a beautifully drinkable Cabernet now, but it also has the depth and structure to reward time in the cellar. It is classic Barossa in feel — generous, warm and built on old-vine character.

VIEW DETAILS
Image of a wine bottle with a label that reads 'WELLAND, BAROSSA, KRIEG'S LEGACY, "OLD HANDS" CABERNET SAUVIGNON, 2021'. The bottle is dark, suggesting a rich red wine within, and it has a grey screw cap. The label is white with a traditional crest and two lions in the centre, lending a classic and prestigious feel. The winery's name 'WELLAND' is at the top in bold black letters, and 'BAROSSA' is prominently displayed underneath.

This is history in the bottle. Original vineyard planted over 100 years ago were saved from the bulldozer by a group of winemakers. The vines that were saved was the fruit used in this bottle.

Winemaker's Notes

Old Hands acknowledges that many of the Barossa‘s finest vineyards are owned by long-time grape growers with years of experience, often with the benefit of advice from past generations. Made in a generous Barossa style the aromas of red fruits, sweet spice and cedar are complemented by a dense and ripe palate of dark fruits, chocolate, soft tannin and length of flavour.

Winemaking:
Picked, crushed and de-stemmed into a fermenter for seven days, the ferment is pumped over twice daily to maximise colour and flavour extraction from the fruit. Filled to French oak with approximately 30% new hogshead barrels for up to 12-18 months maturation prior to bottling.

Further Information About this Wine

The Welland vineyard sits in Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley and was first planted in 1923 by one of the region’s founding families. Today, it remains the last surviving section of the original vineyard that has not been subdivided and built upon, making it a rare piece of living Barossa history.
The name Old Hands speaks to the generations of growers who have worked this land over decades, learning from those before them and passing that knowledge forward. It is a wine built not just on fruit quality, but on accumulated understanding of site, season and vine.
In the glass, the wine captures that sense of history with a warm, generous Barossa style. Sweet red fruits, cassis, cedar and spice lead into a palate of dark fruit, chocolate, gentle herbs and toasty oak. The tannins are soft and well integrated, giving the wine immediate drinkability, while the depth of fruit and vineyard pedigree suggest it will also reward further time in bottle.
This is Barossa Cabernet with authenticity, heritage and character — the kind of bottle that feels grounded in place rather than made to chase fashion.

About Welland Wines

Welland is part of the fabric of Barossa history. Located in Nuriootpa, the vineyard was first planted in 1923 by one of the Barossa’s founding families and remains the last intact portion of the original site. Wines from Welland are built around heritage, site and old-vine character, with a style that leans into richness, generosity and authenticity rather than fashion. Old Hands is a fitting name for a wine that honours the generations of growers who have worked this land and passed their knowledge down over time.

About Barossa Valley Wine Region

The Barossa Valley is one of Australia’s most famous wine regions, celebrated for powerful reds, old vines and deep generational farming knowledge. While Shiraz often grabs the spotlight, Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon can be equally compelling, offering rich black fruit, cassis, cedar and warm spice wrapped in a generous, full-flavoured style. With warm days, cool nights and a patchwork of ancient soils, the region produces red wines with both immediate appeal and long-term cellaring potential.
