Welland Barossa "Old Hands" Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

Old Hands acknowledges that many of the Barossa‘s finest vineyards are owned by long-time grape growers with years of experience, often with the benefit of advice from past generations. Made in a generous Barossa style the aromas of red fruits, sweet spice and cedar are complemented by a dense and ripe palate of dark fruits, chocolate, soft tannin and length of flavour.

Winemaking:
Picked, crushed and de-stemmed into a fermenter for seven days, the ferment is pumped over twice daily to maximise colour and flavour extraction from the fruit. Filled to French oak with approximately 30% new hogshead barrels for up to 12-18 months maturation prior to bottling.

Drinking beautifully now for its generous fruit and soft tannin profile, but will reward medium-term cellaring as the cedar, herb and savoury Cabernet characters continue to evolve over the next 10 years.

The Welland vineyard sits in Nuriootpa in the Barossa Valley and was first planted in 1923 by one of the region’s founding families. Today, it remains the last surviving section of the original vineyard that has not been subdivided and built upon, making it a rare piece of living Barossa history.
The name Old Hands speaks to the generations of growers who have worked this land over decades, learning from those before them and passing that knowledge forward. It is a wine built not just on fruit quality, but on accumulated understanding of site, season and vine.
In the glass, the wine captures that sense of history with a warm, generous Barossa style. Sweet red fruits, cassis, cedar and spice lead into a palate of dark fruit, chocolate, gentle herbs and toasty oak. The tannins are soft and well integrated, giving the wine immediate drinkability, while the depth of fruit and vineyard pedigree suggest it will also reward further time in bottle.
