Winemaker's Notes

This Single Vineyard Montepulciano is sourced from the Stansborough Vineyard in Williamstown, Barossa Valley. At an elevation of 260-280m, the vineyard benefits from a mix of quartz, ironstone, and shale soils, giving the wine its distinctive complexity and minerality. The vineyard has been run organically since 2017, ensuring the fruit reflects its terroir. Handpicked on 28th March 2020, the fruit was destemmed and fermented with minimal intervention. Aged in a mix of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads for 16 months, the wine has a refined balance of plum, cherry, and herbal aromas with a long, fine tannin finish.

The 2020 vintage produced a Montepulciano that truly expresses its site. After fermentation and 13 days on skins, the wine was basket pressed and transferred to French oak (a mix of new and older hogsheads) for 16 months of aging. No fining was used, ensuring the purity of the wine’s structure and flavour. The result is a complex wine with vibrant fruit, firm but fine tannins, and natural acidity that lengthens the palate.

Craig and Mark

Purple Hands

When two good mates get together, one the Chief Winemaker with a major winery, the other with a passion for wine –  the inevitable had to happen and Purple Hands Wines was created.

Craig Stansborough and Mark Slade started Purple Hands in 2006 from humble beginnings. Just over a tonne of hand picked Shiraz was crushed and barrel fermented in Craig’s shed making around 100 dozen. Then came the hard part – finding a name for their new wine brand.

Why the name Purple Hands?

Anyone who has made red wine will know what a pair of purple stained hands looks like!

A red winemakers’ hands become stained purple during vintage due to the constant contact with grape skins and the juice. And of  course when winemakers are busy, they wipe their hands on their shirt.

That was the inspiration behind Purple Hands Wines.

About the Wine Region: Barossa Valley

The Barossa Valley, home to some of Australia’s most iconic wines, is known for its diverse soils and rich winemaking history. The Stansborough Vineyard sits in the cooler, southern end of the Barossa, where the soils are a mix of red clay, quartz, ironstone, and shale. The vineyard’s elevation and organic practices contribute to the wine’s natural acidity, minerality, and depth, producing a Montepulciano with both power and elegance.
