96 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

The 2019 Denton Nebbiolo isn’t just a wine—it’s a revelation. Sourced from a rare granite-based vineyard in the Yarra Valley, this wine is a textbook expression of Nebbiolo with a distinct Aussie twist.

Expect bright red fruit, aniseed, and floral perfume, all framed by Nebbiolo’s signature fine, powdery tannins and crisp acid structure. This is serious Nebbiolo, handcrafted by Luke Lambert, one of Australia’s most respected Nebbiolo specialists.

How it’s made:

  • Wild yeast fermentation
  • 18 days on skins with foot stomping & plunging
  • Aged for 18 months in old 500L puncheons (20% new oak)
  • No fining, no filtration, no BS—just pure Nebbiolo magic.

It’s Old World meets New World—a wine for Nebbiolo purists who also love a bit of rebellious energy.

A bottle of 2019 Denton Nebbiolo, showcasing its refined label and Yarra Valley origins. Dark and moody label sets the scene.

96 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

"Destemmed, natural-yeast fermented and kept on skins for 18 days with frequent plunging and foot stomping. Matured in 500L French oak puncheons (20% new) and left unsulphured for 18 months. A bright, medium, ruby red. There's lots going on here. Aromas of dark cherries, cherry and sandalwood, dried roses, orange peel and botanicals such as quinine and juniper. The palate is ripe and beautifully brought back into focus by the wine's refreshing acidity and grippy yet fine tannins. Finishes ferrous and long."

Winemaker's Notes

Site: Denton Vineyard - Yarra Valley
Soil type: Granite
Aspect: North-West

The Nebbiolo block sits half way up the North Western slope, catching all available sunshine hours. The granitic sand over granite boulders and long, slow growing season provide a very special and unique terroir.
This unique micro-climate and soil profile contribute lots of bright, fresh red fruit, aniseed, red flower perfume, and fine tannin on an acid frame.

Winemaking:
Destemmed, wild yeast fermented and held on skins for 18 days with frequent plunging and foot stomping. No temperature control. Pressed to 500 litre French oak puncheons (20% new) and left unsulfured for 18 months prior to bottling without fining or filtration.

Vintage 2019:
A very good growing season. 2019 was warmer and dryer than average with an early harvest, low disease pressure and riper/fresher/fuller wines. An early harvest suggests a short season, but the last period of ripening was perfect Autumn weather with mild, soft sunlight helping to retain acidity and freshness.
