"Sourced from the Zerk vineyard in Lyndoch; 30% whole cluster. Fragrant and bouncy fruits on the nose, red cherry and plum, redcurrant and cranberries. Hints of gingerbread, fine spice, cola, citrus blossom, red lollies and earth. Vibrant, pure and bouncy on the palate with lovely spiced red fruits and amaro tones. Great, energetic drinking."

Winemaker's Notes

Vineyards:
Zerk Vineyards, Lyndoch, Barossa Valley. Planted 1961 & Circa 1890

Winemaking:
Around 30% whole clusters were tipped into open fermenters with the balance crushed on top, header boards were placed on day 2 of ferment. Ferment was the result of indigenous and cultured yeast. Temperatures were allowed to reach 30C with pump overs performed 2 times daily reducing to nil later in ferment. After 9 and 11 days on skins the fruit was basket pressed and transferred into older puncheons to undergo malo-lactic fermentation. Post malo the wine was then left 3 weeks before SO2 was added in place, the wine was then left on lees and topped regularly. The wine was racked and blended late November 2021 and underwent filtration prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes:
Vibrant crimson colour leads to aromas of raspberry, cherry and bergamot, whole clusters adding subtle herbal notes adding to the complexity. Palate is mid weight and textural with generous red berry sweet fruit, fine fruit and stem tannins add balance to the mouthfeel, crisp acidity gives a wonderful crunchy and cleansing note to the wine. Drink now or cellar carefully and enjoy over the next 8 years.

Cellaring Recommendations

Enjoy now or cellar for up to 8 years to further develop its subtle complexities and enhance its graceful character.

Craig and Mark

Purple Hands

When two good mates get together, one the Chief Winemaker with a major winery, the other with a passion for wine –  the inevitable had to happen and Purple Hands Wines was created.

Craig Stansborough and Mark Slade started Purple Hands in 2006 from humble beginnings. Just over a tonne of hand picked Shiraz was crushed and barrel fermented in Craig’s shed making around 100 dozen. Then came the hard part – finding a name for their new wine brand.

Why the name Purple Hands?

Anyone who has made red wine will know what a pair of purple stained hands looks like!

A red winemakers’ hands become stained purple during vintage due to the constant contact with grape skins and the juice. And of  course when winemakers are busy, they wipe their hands on their shirt.

That was the inspiration behind Purple Hands Wines.

Purple Hands Grenache

About the Winery: Purple Hands
Purple Hands Wines, founded by winemaker Craig Stansborough and wine enthusiast Mark Slade in 2006, is dedicated to producing terroir-driven wines that capture the essence of the Barossa Valley. With their organically managed Stansborough Vineyard, they produce a range of wines that embody elegance, texture, and balance, respecting both the environment and the heritage of the region.

About the Wine Region: Barossa Valley
The Barossa Valley's southern end, where the Stansborough Vineyard is located, provides a unique micro-climate ideal for Grenache. The vineyard’s red clay, quartz, and ironstone soil contributes to the wine’s bright acidity, refined tannins, and complex flavour profile, making it a signature expression of Barossa Valley's cool southern edge.
