Description

The 2018 Welland Old Hands Shiraz encapsulates the rich heritage and robust character of Barossa Valley's renowned Shiraz. This vintage delivers a sophisticated palate of dark plum and mocha, enriched by nuanced hints of liquorice and cedar. The integration of subtle oak and tannins crafts a smooth, well-rounded experience, showcasing the deep, fleshy fruit typical of old vineyards. Its deep colour and complex aroma promise an evolving experience, hinting at greater depths with aging. 

In South Australia’s Barossa Valley, in the township of Nuriootpa is where you’ll find the Welland vineyard. Planted in 1923 by one of the Barossa’s founding families, Welland is the last remaining section of the original vineyard that hasn't been subdivided and built upon. 

The winery's name 'WELLAND' is at the top in bold black letters, and 'BAROSSA' is prominently displayed underneath. The words 'OLD HANDS' in quotation marks add character, and the type of wine Shiraz, along with the vintage year, are elegantly presented at the bottom of the label

Winemaker's Notes

Old Hands acknowledges that many of the Barossa‘s finest vineyards are owned by long-time grape growers with years of experience, often with the benefit of advice from past generations. Made in a generous Barossa style the aromas of red fruits, sweet spice and cedar are complemented by a dense and ripe palate of dark fruits, chocolate, soft tannin and length of flavour.

Winemaking:
Picked, crushed and de-stemmed into a fermenter for seven days, the ferment is pumped over twice daily to maximise colour and flavour extraction from the fruit. Filled to American oak with approximately 40% new hogshead barrels for 14-18 months maturation prior to bottling.
