Hoffmann Church Block Grenache 2020

Hoffmann Church Block Grenache 2020

SKU:2020 | Barossa Valley | Grenache

Description

Dark, layered Barossa Grenache with the volume turned right up.

The Hoffmann Church Block Grenache 2020 isn’t “just a nice Grenache” – it feels like a place. Drawn from Hoffmann family vineyards in the northern Barossa, this wine channels generations of farming know-how into one seriously expressive bottle. It’s not trying to be cute or polished for everyone; it’s confident, powerful and unapologetically itself.

In the glass, it sits at the midnight end of the spectrum: dark chocolate, freshly tanned leather, black peppercorns, cocoa and warm earth roll out first, with raspberries, blood plum and macerated cherry underneath. That trademark “kicked-earth” character lends weight and gravitas, pulling the fruit down into deeper, more serious territory.

The palate is enveloping and intense – layered, undulating black and red fruits wrapped in dense yet fine tannins. There’s a savoury, mineral edge and enough spice to keep things moving, finishing long, dry and beautifully structured. It’s a wine to sit with, not rush; the kind of bottle that can silence a table for a moment.

  • Vineyards: Old-vine Grenache from Lyndoch (Zerk & Caiazza) and Moppa (Keady), 250–300m altitude
  • Winemaking: 20–25% whole clusters, open fermenters, basket pressed, matured in seasoned puncheons
  • Style: Dark, powerful, age-worthy Barossa Grenache
  • Serving: Best with a gentle decant and large-bowled glass
  • Food pairing: Charcoal-grilled lamb, slow-cooked beef, spiced eggplant or mushroom dishes

A Grenache with real soul – rich, layered and absolutely memorable.

94 Points – Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

“The 2020 Church Block Grenache leads with dark chocolate and freshly tanned leather, black peppercorns and cocoa. There is a kicked-earth character to this wine that lends density and gravitas to the fruit and sends it down to the darker end of the spectrum. The midnight end. In the mouth, the fruit is enveloping and intense, layered and undulating. It is an experience this wine: sybaritic in its way, dense and accented with chiaroscuro. It’s an epic wine and unapologetic in its expression. 15.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.” Erin Larkin

Cellaring Recommendations

Drinks brilliantly now with a good decant to let the fruit and spice unfurl, but will reward 8–12 years in the cellar as the tannins resolve and more savoury, gamey complexity develops.

About Hoffmann Family Wines

Hoffmann Family Vineyards is a sixth-generation Barossa grower operation based in the northern reaches of the valley. The first vines were planted on Hoffmann land in the 1880s, with fruit historically sold to houses like Seppeltsfield. Today, Adrian Hoffmann farms around 135–150 hectares, split into roughly 20 distinct sites, and is regarded as one of the Barossa’s go-to growers for top-end Shiraz and Grenache. His approach – “next level viticulture” – combines generational knowledge of every row with modern tools such as frost fans, drought-proofing and adaptive pruning. The result is intensely flavoured, characterful fruit that underpins some of Australia’s most exciting single-vineyard wines.

About Barossa Valley Wine Region

About the Wine Region: Northern Barossa Valley

The Barossa Valley is one of Australia’s most iconic and historic wine regions, known for producing bold and powerful Shiraz. Located in South Australia, the Barossa Valley has a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and cool winters, providing ideal conditions for viticulture.
The Northern Barossa, where the Hoffmann vineyards are situated, is particularly renowned for its ancient, low-yielding vines, which produce some of the most concentrated and flavour-packed Shiraz in the world.

The Northern Barossa’s sub-region of Ebenezer is famed for its unique combination of deep red-brown soils over limestone, which contributes to the distinctive character of its wines. Wines from this area often display intense dark fruit, spice, and chocolate notes, with robust tannins and great aging potential. The warm climate in the Northern Barossa, combined with these old vines, allows for the development of complex and powerful wines, particularly Shiraz, which thrives in these conditions. The region is also celebrated for Grenache and Mataro, which add to the diversity of the Barossa’s red wine offerings.
