Purple Hands Old Vine Barossa Valley Grenache 2024

Purple Hands Old Vine Barossa Valley Grenache 2024

SKU:2024 | Barossa Valley | Grenache

Description

Governor’s Trophy-winner at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show.
Old-vine Barossa Grenache at its most seductive.

Winner of the Governor’s Trophy for Best SA Red Wine at the Royal Adelaide Wine Show plus multiple gold medals at other shows, this 2024 Old Vine Grenache is Purple Hands turned up to eleven. From treasured Lyndoch and Moppa vineyards, it pours a vibrant crimson and leaps out of the glass with aromas of raspberry, mulberry and cranberry, laced with citrus/bergamot, orange blossom, gingerbread and five-spice.

The palate is mid-weight yet wonderfully intense – juicy red berry fruit wrapped around fine, chalky tannins and a subtle whole-bunch stem spice. There’s a savoury undercurrent of dried meats and earth that keeps things serious, while the bright, minerally line gives crunch, lift and mouth-watering refreshment.

Three old-vine sites – Zerk (1961), Caiazza (1890 & 1981) and Keady (1989) – are hand-picked, with 20–25% whole clusters and wild ferments before basket pressing to seasoned puncheons. It’s classic Barossa Grenache in modern mode: fragrant, textural and dangerously drinkable.

“The 25% whole bunch in the '24 release lends some lovely exotic spice and light amaro tones to the proceedings. Perhaps a little darker plum and cherry fruits this year but still with a touch of cranberry lift. Hints of gingerbread, five-spice, cola, orange blossom, dried meats and earth. Pure and succulent with a savoury lean at the tail, chalky tannins and a bright, minerally driveline.”
Dave Brookes for the James Halliday Wine Companion

Winemaker's Notes

Vineyards:
Zerk Vineyards, Lyndoch, Barossa Valley. Planted 1961 & Circa 1890

Winemaking:
Around 30% whole clusters were tipped into open fermenters with the balance crushed on top, header boards were placed on day 2 of ferment. Ferment was the result of indigenous and cultured yeast. Temperatures were allowed to reach 30C with pump overs performed 2 times daily reducing to nil later in ferment. After 9 and 11 days on skins the fruit was basket pressed and transferred into older puncheons to undergo malo-lactic fermentation. Post malo the wine was then left 3 weeks before SO2 was added in place, the wine was then left on lees and topped regularly. The wine was racked and blended late November 2021 and underwent filtration prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes:
Vibrant crimson colour leads to aromas of raspberry, cherry and bergamot, whole clusters adding subtle herbal notes adding to the complexity. Palate is mid weight and textural with generous red berry sweet fruit, fine fruit and stem tannins add balance to the mouthfeel, crisp acidity gives a wonderful crunchy and cleansing note to the wine. Drink now or cellar carefully and enjoy over the next 8 years.

Further Information About this Wine

Sourced from three key Barossa sites, this Old Vine Grenache is a masterclass in northern Barossa fruit. The Zerk vineyard at Lyndoch (planted 1961) sits around 250m above sea level on deep red clay with bands of ironstone and shale. The Caiazza vineyard, also in Lyndoch (planted 1890 and 1981), lies slightly higher at 260m on deep sand over clay, with minimal irrigation used only in very dry seasons. The Keady vineyard at Moppa (planted 1989) contributes fruit from 300m elevation, where silty clay loams over red clay and weathered siltstone rock add structure and drive.
All three vineyards are own-rooted Grenache, with clone material unknown but clearly well suited to site. Hand-picked across three harvest dates, around 20–25% whole clusters were tipped into open fermenters and covered with crushed berries. The Caiazza fruit was fermented under header boards, while Zerk and Keady were handled in smaller open fermenters. Ferments relied on a mix of indigenous and cultured yeasts, allowed to reach around 30°C, with pump-overs twice daily early on.
After eight days on skins the fruit was basket pressed and run to seasoned French oak puncheons as separate parcels for malolactic fermentation. The wine then rested on lees, topped regularly, before being racked, blended in late November 2024 and filtered prior to bottling.
The result is a mid-weight yet intensely flavoured Grenache where old-vine concentration meets modern, whole-bunch spice and a bright, mineral spine. Trophy wins and multiple gold medals underline what’s in the glass: this is benchmark Barossa Grenache that massively over-delivers for the price.

About Purple Hands

About the Winery: Purple Hands
Purple Hands Wines, founded by winemaker Craig Stansborough and wine enthusiast Mark Slade in 2006, is dedicated to producing terroir-driven wines that capture the essence of the Barossa Valley. With their organically managed Stansborough Vineyard, they produce a range of wines that embody elegance, texture, and balance, respecting both the environment and the heritage of the region.

About Barossa Valley Wine Region

The Barossa Valley is Australia’s most famous wine region and a global stronghold for old-vine Shiraz and Grenache. Warm days, cool nights and a patchwork of soils—red-brown earths, sands and clays over limestone—produce reds of generous fruit, spice and structure. Many vineyards here were planted in the late 1800s and early 1900s, making them some of the oldest continuously producing vines in the world. Today, a new generation of winemakers is pairing that ancient vine material with contemporary techniques to craft wines that are brighter, more aromatic and food-friendly, while still unmistakably Barossa.
