Description

Old-school Chardy comfort meets new-wave freshness. Thea Chardonnay 2024 walks the perfect line between creamy, oak-kissed richness and bright, fruit-driven bite.

Sourced from the renowned Poppy’s Vineyard in Pokolbin, Hunter Valley, this hand-picked Chardonnay is whole-bunch pressed, barrel fermented in seasoned oak and matured on lees with a lick of malolactic fermentation.

The result? Fresh stone fruit and citrus wrapped around notes of brioche, butter and nutty toast, with oak sitting quietly in the background rather than shouting from the front row.

The palate is silky and balanced – ripe peach, nectarine and lemon curd glide across the tongue, finishing with gentle creaminess, subtle spice and a mouth-watering line of acidity. It’s the sweet spot between old-school ‘buttery Chardy’ and modern, crisp styles.

  • Region: Poppy’s Vineyard, Pokolbin – Hunter Valley, NSW
  • Style: Mid-weight, creamy yet fresh Chardonnay
  • Oak: Barrel fermented and matured in seasoned French oak with lees work and partial malo
  • Drinkability: Balanced, easy to love – appeals to both classic Chardonnay fans and modern crisp-wine drinkers
  • Food pairing: Roast chicken, creamy pasta, grilled scallops, or a simple roast veg tray bake

If you’ve ever been torn between rich and oaky versus bright and citrusy Chardonnay, this is the bottle that brings both worlds together.

Winemaker's Notes

The 2024 Thea Chardonnay is sourced from the renowned Poppy’s Vineyard in Pokolbin — a Hunter Valley site that quietly produces fruit with the kind of poise winemakers dream about. Hand-picked in the cool of the morning, the grapes were whole-bunch pressed to capture pristine freshness while adding subtle depth and textural charm. From
there, the juice headed straight into seasoned French oak for a wild ferment and eight-month maturation. A little lees stirring and a touch of malolactic fermentation helped build creaminess and complexity without weighing the wine down — think finesse, but with a bit of personality.

Further Information About this Wine

The style is deliberately “in between”: generous enough for die-hard Chardy lovers, but bright and refreshing enough for those who usually prefer leaner, modern whites. It’s an easy go-to for dinner parties when everyone at the table likes something a bit different.

About Thea Wines

Thea Wines is the passion project of Hunter Valley winemaking duo Allanna and Michael Wells. Named after Thea, the Greek goddess of wisdom and insight, the label is all about wines that tell stories – bottles you open to mark moments and create memories. Working with carefully chosen sites in the Hunter and Hilltops, they craft small-batch Chardonnay and Shiraz that reflect both place and personality: thoughtful, finely tuned and made to be shared. Every release is limited, handmade and designed to bring a little extra meaning to the occasions you pour it for.

About Hilltops Wine Region

Australia’s oldest continuous wine region, the Hunter Valley is renowned for expressive Semillon and characterful Chardonnay. Warm days, cooling coastal influences and volcanic and sandy loam soils combine to produce whites with vibrant acidity, citrus and stone-fruit flavours, and the ability to develop honeyed, toasty complexity with time. Pokolbin sits at the heart of the region, home to some of the country’s most historic vineyards as well as a new wave of small producers like Thea, who are crafting modern, textured styles built for the table.
