Description

Iconic Australian Cabernet Shiraz, in a rare cork-sealed 2018 special release.

First created in 1973, Wolf Blass Black Label has long been one of Australia’s most awarded reds. The 2018 vintage is a stunning modern example – a powerful yet beautifully polished blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from Barossa Valley, Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale, bottled under traditional cork.

Deep, inky purple in the glass, it opens with a lifted nose of blackberry, blackcurrant and dark plum, layered with bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee beans, tobacco and toasted nut complexity. The palate is generous and luxurious: concentrated black fruits, dark chocolate and cedary oak glide across the tongue, supported by long, velvety tannins and juicy acidity.

This is seamless, plush and wonderfully textural – classic Black Label, built on multi-regional synergy and magnificent structure. A wine with decades ahead of it, yet already a pleasure to drink if you love dense, silken, age-worthy reds.

96 Points - James Halliday

“56/44% cabernet/shiraz, sourced from Barossa Valley, Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale; 3 clones in 13 parcels. Matured in French (20% new) and American (4% new) oak for 18 months, blended at the conclusion of maturation. Deeply coloured, this is full bodied, with firm tannins running through the length of the palate, trading blows with the blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, the ultimate balance calling an end to the battle. But it needs time – lots of it.” James Halliday Wine Companion

Winemaker's Notes

Rich, deep purple in colour. A lifted nose of blackberry, blackcurrant and dark plum is layered with bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee beans and hints of tobacco. Toasted nut characters from barrel fermentation and maturation add further complexity. The palate is generous and beautifully balanced, with dark berry fruit, coffee and cedary oak. At once rich and elegant, with seamless texture, long, smooth, chocolatey tannins and a persistence of flavour that is unmistakably Black Label.

Further Information About this Wine

Wolf Blass Black Label has been at the heart of the brand since 1973, created from the best parcels of the vintage and blended across regions to achieve a “synergistic whole” that is greater than the sum of its parts. The 2018 is a classic expression of that philosophy, combining Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from Barossa Valley, Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale.
Fruit from each vineyard was harvested at optimum ripeness, then crushed, destemmed and fermented separately for seven to twelve days on skins. Gentle plunging and pump-overs maximised colour and flavour, with mid-ferment cooling extending time on skins to enhance line and length. Some batches finished fermentation in barrel to integrate oak and build texture.
The wine then spent 18 months in a mix of seasoned and new French oak hogsheads and a small portion of American oak before blending. The result is layered, multi-dimensional and built to age: intense black fruits, chocolate, coffee and tobacco wrapped in long, velvety tannins and that unmistakable Black Label richness. This 2018 special release is finished under cork – a nod to tradition for collectors and fans of the style.

About Wolf Blass

Founded in 1966 by the energetic and visionary Wolfgang Blass, Wolf Blass Wines grew from a humble tin shed in the Barossa into one of the world’s most recognised Australian wine brands. Built on a philosophy of careful blending, consistency and drinkability, the winery became famous in the 1970s after multiple Jimmy Watson Trophy wins and has collected more than 10,000 awards globally. Today Wolf Blass wines are exported to over 50 countries, but Black Label remains its spiritual flagship – the wine that best captures the house style of power, polish and multi-regional complexity.

About Barossa Valley | McLaren Vale | Langhorne Creek Wine Region

This Black Label draws on three of South Australia’s great red-wine regions. Barossa Valley brings richness, dark fruit and chocolatey depth; Langhorne Creek contributes smooth, succulent blackcurrant character and plush mid-palate; McLaren Vale adds dark plum, savoury notes and structural backbone. Together they create a wine with layered flavour, fine tannin structure and the ability to age gracefully over decades – the essence of what Black Label has always aimed to be.
