Description

Single-vineyard Barossa history in a bottle. North by Adrian Hoffmann 2018 is his personal expression of North Barossa Shiraz – drawn from the legendary Dallwitz Block, where vines planted between the late 1800s and early 1900s still stand.

This first release comes from just two barrels: one from 100-year-old Shiraz vines and one from 30-year-old cuttings taken from those centenarian vines. The result is a wine of immense concentration and presence. Inky and deeply coloured, it delivers layers of raspberry coulis, black plum, red gravel, pink peppercorn, pan drippings, roasted meats and roses. The palate is viscous yet perfectly balanced, long, and saturated with flavour, finishing with powerful but beautifully shaped tannins.

Fermented in small open fermenters with a cold soak and gentle daily pump-overs, then matured for five years in new French oak before a further 12 months in bottle, this is an unapologetically serious Barossa Shiraz built for the long haul. Production is tiny and the story is pure Hoffmann: vineyard first, vintage expression, and next-level viticulture.

96 Points – Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

“The 2018 North by Adrian Hoffmann is sourced from the Dallwitz Block and is the first release of this wine. ‘This is one barrel of our 100-year-old block and one barrel from Eric’s corner, right next door,’ says Adrian Hoffmann. I ask Hoffmann what he is looking to express via the fruit. ‘It has to tell the story of the vintage, as well as the vineyard,’ he says. The concentration of this wine is immense; it almost defies words. It’s inky and viscose in the mouth but long and prolonged through the finish. There are notes of raspberry coulis, red gravel, pink peppercorns, sweet roasted bone marrow, blood/black pudding, pan drippings and roses. It is a magnificent wine, and the alcohol just works in the context of it. 16.3% alcohol, sealed under cork.”

Winemaker's Notes

“North by Adrian Hoffmann is my personal expression of the North Barossa style and of the Dallwitz Block in particular. The 2018 release comes from two barrels only: one from our 100-year-old vines and one from 30-year-old cuttings taken from those vines. The vineyard is classic Dallwitz – terra rossa red-brown earth with limestone ridges, Biscay and sandy loam over red prismatic clay. Fermentation was in small open fermenters, with a cold soak and minimal intervention, using short daily pump-overs to gently extract colour and flavour. The wine spent five years in new French oak and a further 12 months in bottle before release. It is dense, inky and powerful but, most importantly, it speaks clearly of the vineyard and the 2018 vintage.”

Ready to enjoy now after its extended time in oak and bottle, but built to age gracefully for 20–30 years. Drink from now through to around 2048 for peak complexity, as the dense fruit, oak and tannins continue to knit together.

Further Information About this Wine

The 2018 North by Adrian Hoffmann Shiraz is the inaugural release of this label and a personal project for Adrian, showcasing the Dallwitz Block in the northern Barossa subregion of Ebenezer. The block is regarded as the jewel in the Hoffmann crown, with Shiraz vines planted between the late 1800s and early 1900s on classic terra rossa and clay soils.
This wine comes from two barrels only: one from 100-year-old vines and one from 30-year-old cuttings taken from those same vines. The small open ferments, cold soak and gentle handling preserve fruit purity while allowing for deep colour, flavour and tannin extraction.
Five years in new French oak is a deliberate choice for an icon wine of this scale, giving structure, spice and a luxurious texture without overwhelming the fruit. A further year in bottle pre-release ensures the wine is settled but still incredibly youthful.
North is designed for collectors and lovers of powerful, old-vine Barossa Shiraz – a wine that tells the story of the vintage, the vineyard and the multi-generational viticulture behind it.

About Hoffmann Family Wines

Hoffmann Family Vineyards is a sixth-generation Barossa farming and grape-growing family, with roots on their Ebenezer property dating back to 1857. The first vines were planted in the 1880s, and today the jewel in the crown is the Dallwitz Block, home to Shiraz vines planted between 1888 and 1912. Around 75% of the vineyard is dedicated to Shiraz, and the Hoffmanns now manage around 150 hectares broken into more than 20 individual sites. Current custodian Adrian Hoffmann has transformed the vineyard with “next-level viticulture”, farming at sub-block level and working closely with a select group of premium winemakers, while also bottling his own wines under the Hoffmann and North labels.

About Barossa Valley Wine Region

The northern Barossa subregion around Ebenezer is famed for producing some of the most powerful and age-worthy Shiraz in Australia. Warm days, cool nights and low rainfall, combined with deep red clays, terra rossa and pockets of sandy loam over clay, create small crops of intensely flavoured grapes. Many vineyards here are home to dry-grown, old-vine Shiraz planted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Wines from Ebenezer typically show dense dark fruit, spice, chocolate, meaty complexity and firm but ripe tannins – a style that has helped define the global reputation of Barossa Shiraz.
