Thea Shiraz 2023

Thea Shiraz 2023

SKU:2023 | Hilltops | Shiraz

Description

The Greek goddess of insight, in Shiraz form. Thea Shiraz 2023 comes from Freeman's Vineyard in the cool Hilltops region of NSW – a site that reliably delivers fruit with both attitude and elegance.

The grapes were crushed and destemmed, then given a gentle cold soak to coax out all that lush, vibrant flavour without heavy-handed extraction. Think of it as a soft-spoken seduction: enough colour and tannin to give shape, never enough to steal the spotlight. The berries were then basket pressed – the slow, old-school, utterly romantic way – before spending 18 months relaxing in French oak.

In the glass, this Shiraz is all glossy dark cherries, blackberry compote and mulberry, lifted with a hint of violet and a whisper of spice as white pepper dances across your palate. The palate is plush and silky, offering ripe forest fruits wrapped in smooth, powdery tannins. There’s a brightness and bounce that keeps everything feeling effortless – which is exactly why this wine is downright delicious served lightly chilled.

For food pairings, aim for something worthy of its charm: chargrilled lamb cutlets with rosemary, duck pancakes with hoisin, or a mushroom and thyme risotto. Whether it’s a slow Sunday lunch or a midweek “I deserve this” moment, this Shiraz is ready to play.

Further Information About this Wine

Thea Shiraz 2023 is crafted by Allanna and Michael Wells under their Thea label, inspired by the Greek goddess of insight and wisdom. The idea is simple: thoughtful, small-batch wines that slot neatly into real life – pizza night, steak night, midweek pasta or Friday knock-off.
Hilltops, in southern NSW, is known for producing Shiraz with both fruit purity and spice. Freeman’s Vineyard provides high-quality fruit that responds well to whole-bunch fermentation. Using 25% whole bunch adds lifted aromatics, supple tannin and a touch of stalky complexity without losing plushness.
Basket pressing is a gentle way of extracting colour and flavour without harsh phenolics, while 8 months in French oak seasons the wine with subtle vanilla, cocoa and spice. The style aims for medium body and freshness rather than heavy-handed power, making it a versatile red that works as well slightly chilled in summer as it does alongside rich, cheesy comfort food in winter.

About Thea Wines

Thea Wines is a boutique project from Hunter Valley winemaking duo Allanna and Michael Wells. Inspired by Thea, the Greek goddess of wisdom and insight, the label is all about wines with meaning – bottles you invite into your life for relaxed dinners, celebrations and everything in between. Working with preferred growers in regions like Hilltops and the Hunter Valley, they craft small-batch Chardonnay and Shiraz that balance flavour, texture and drinkability. The focus is on thoughtful winemaking, honest storytelling and wines that feel at home on the table, not just in the cellar.

About Hilltops Wine Region

Hilltops, New South Wales
Located around Young, in the high country of southern NSW, the Hilltops region sits on elevated slopes with cool nights, warm days and ancient granite-based soils. The climate is ideal for Shiraz, producing wines with dark fruit, spice, fine tannins and a distinct savoury edge. Hilltops has become a go-to region for modern, food-friendly Shiraz styles – combining ripeness and generosity with freshness and structure – and offers excellent value compared to some of the more famous red-wine regions.
