MMAD Vineyard Grenache 2023

SKU:2023 | Blewitt Springs | Grenache

Description

96 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

This is Grenache with pedigree. From 1939 vines in Blewitt Springs, the 2023 MMAD Vineyard Grenache is the result of a cooler, late-ripening season that delivered both elegance and concentration. It’s beautifully perfumed with red fruits and baking spice, supported by a silky mid-palate and seamlessly integrated tannins. Aged in large, old French oak and fermented in wood and concrete, this is a pure, expressive wine that speaks clearly of its ancient McLaren Vale terroir.

96 Points James Halliday Wine Companion

"Grown on Maslin sand, with the oldest grenache vines planted in '39. Floral and sultry, with intense red fruits, dark raspberry, macerated strawberry and pomegranate juice, cracked whole spices, coal dust. There are black cherry notes, too, with a certain darkness to the vivid and lively fruit profile, the old vines having their say, perhaps. That quality is repeated on the palate, with the silkiness those vines yield a feature of all the releases thus far, the tannins resolute and resolved, carrying the flavours long. There’s a clear thread emerging with the MMAD wines that tell a distinctive story of place, and it’s one that’s exciting to watch unfold." - Marcus Ellis for the James Halliday Wine Companion

Further Information About this Wine

Our third year tending to the old vines was our latest and
coolest vintage yet. The late season gave a wide picking
window, allowing us to harvest fruit at optimal ripeness. As a
result, concentration and depth of flavour are balanced with
lovely, cool-season aromatics. Intense red fruit and baking
spice continue through to a silky mid-palate, where lengthy
tannins effortlessly tie it all together. The grapes were mostly
destemmed, and fermented in wood and concrete before
aging in large, old French oak.
Serving Temperature - 16 – 18°C
Cellaring Potential - Has the concentration and structure to
develop fine tertiary characters in bottle over the next 15
years.

THE VINEYARD
Located in the dress circle of Blewitt Springs, MMAD Vineyard
has Grenache that was first planted in 1939, as well as Shiraz
and Chenin Blanc, the oldest of which were planted in 1941
and 1964 respectively. The vineyard has the fine Maslin sands
found in Blewitt Springs, and is exposed to the fresh sea
breezes from the south-west. Below the sand is a layer of
ironstone pebbles, and this combination of sand, ironstone,
and cooling winds gives both perfume and structure to the
wines.

THE STORY
The old vines of Blewitt Springs are a precious resource, and
an important part of Australia's viticultural history. In early
2021, MMAD Vineyard was purchased by a quartet made
up of winemakers Martin Shaw and Adam Wadewitz, and
Masters of Wine Michael Hill-Smith and David LeMire.
MMAD takes its name from their first initials. The MMAD
wines aim to reflect the unique terroir of Blewitt Springs and
the rare old vines that thrive there.

About MMAD Vineyards

The MMAD vineyard is a side project for the team behind Shaw + Smith and Tolpuddle, though it’s a significant side project at that, with nearly 20 hectares of vines in the Maslin sands of McLaren Vale’s Blewitt Springs and vines dating back to the 1930s. It’s a site that’s already seen a trio of celebrated premium releases – chenin blanc, grenache and shiraz – from the 2021 vintage, the same year the vineyard was acquired. And while the MMAD label has been swiftly accepted as though it has been around for a decade, vineyard manager Ben Jonas is taking a long-term view on continually enhancing the health of those heritage vines and planning for an even brighter future through a sustainable approach with organic certification on the horizon.

About Blewitt Springs Wine Region

Blewitt Springs is home to some remarkable vineyards, with a unique combination of sandy soils, coastal breezes, and grand old vines. In the case of Grenache in particular, there is a special synergy between the place and the variety, which becomes even more pronounced when the third element, vine age, is added.

The sandy soils of Blewitt Springs have long been known to give the wines beautiful perfume. In some sites, there is also ironstone, which gives the wine structure to match the beauty. The altitude of 150 – 220 metres means the sea breezes from Gulf St Vincent cool the vines, and keep the acids fresh.

The combination of these elements has seen Blewitt Springs become home to some of our most revered ‘rare earth,’ perfectly suited to making wines that have an ethereal perfume, intensity but lightness, and the ability to age gracefully.
