Description

Turkey Flat Shiraz 2022

Barossa history in a bottle. Crafted from some of the world’s oldest Shiraz vines—planted in 1847 on the Bethany Road vineyard—this wine marries power with poise.

Aromas of violets, fresh black fruits and spice rise from the glass with a hint of cedar. The palate is alive with blackberry, dark chocolate and plum, framed by fine, powdery tannins, a ferrous-like minerality and a savoury, long finish.

Each parcel (Bethany & Stonewell) was individually vinified in open-top fermenters and matured in French oak for up to 18 months, then blended to uphold Turkey Flat’s hallmark balance, freshness and cellarability.

  • Vine age: Bethany Road vines planted 1847 (among the oldest Shiraz vines worldwide)
  • Region: Barossa Valley, South Australia
  • Style: Perfumed, plush, cellar-worthy
  • Cellaring: Enjoy now or cellar 10–15 years. Minimal filtration—natural bottle deposit may form.
  • Food pairing: Slow-cooked beef short ribs or rosemary lamb shoulder

"A sinewy, chewy-tannined shiraz release from the 2022 vintage, slick with plush black cherry, blackberry and dark plum fruits along with hints of clove and dark spice, coal dust, olive tapenade, licorice, dark chocolate and earth. Plenty of structure and muscle on the palate with a broody aspect to the deep cassis-like fruit as it slowly retreats from view.' - James Halliday Wine Companion Dave Brookes

About Turkey Flat

The Turkey Flat vineyards are located on the banks of the Tanunda Creek, in the heart of the Barossa Valley.

In a nutshell: Turkey Flat is the local name for the vineyard property and is believed to be named by the original settlers in the late 1840s after the large flocks of native bush turkeys in the area. It was here that the first Shiraz vines were planted in 1847, propagating from cuttings from Hermitage Hill in the Rhône Valley in the 1830s and still remaining a productive part of Turkey Flats vineyards today.

The Schulz family became owners of the Turkey Flat property in around 1865 and, while they continued to tend the ancient vineyard, they also developed a thriving butcher’s business. Today the business is still family-owned and run by fourth generation, Christie Schulz, and continues to remain a Rhône varietal expert. Christie leads the team along with new Chief Winemaker James Adams, a sixth generation Barossan born into a winemaking family dating back to 1919.

About Barossa Valley Wine Region

Power, Heritage, and Old Vines

The Barossa Valley is Australia's most iconic wine region, located just an hour north of Adelaide in South Australia. It's a land of rolling hills, red clay soils, and dry-grown vineyards—many of which are over a century old.
This is Shiraz country. Bold, plush, and powerful wines have made Barossa famous worldwide. But the story doesn’t stop there. The region also produces exceptional Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Mataro, along with complex Semillon and rich fortifieds.

What sets Barossa apart is its heritage. Generations of winemaking families, ancient vine material, and deep respect for the land all shape its wines. From the sun-soaked Western Ridge to the cooler Eden Valley heights, the diversity of microclimates offers surprising elegance and complexity.
Whether you're chasing age-worthy reds or character-filled small-batch wines, Barossa delivers big flavour and timeless authenticity.
