Description

Halliday Wine Companion 2024 TOP-RATED GRENACHE & BLENDS, 97 POINTS - James Halliday, August 2023

GSM Blend of 53% Grenache, 33% Shiraz, 14% Mourvèdre.

This Grenache is handpicked from their old bush vines planted in 1946, which forms the back-bone of this wine. The most elegant and perfumed Shiraz was selected to complement the blend and lastly the winemaker added Mourvèdre to give fragrance and a solid tannin structure. All resulting in one of the best GSM blends in Australia.

VIEW DETAILS
The image shows a bottle of Yangarra Estate Vineyard GSM from the 2021 vintage. GSM stands for Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, indicating the types of grapes blended to make this wine. The label is simple and elegant, with a clean white background and the winery's name "Yangarra" in a large, serif font.

"A single-vineyard Blewitt Springs blend of 53/33/14% grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre. Planted on sand and ironstone soils, the grenache hand picked from bush vines planted in 1946. This is a serious GSM in every way. It's very intense and complex, but it's also seamless and composed, with an orchestra of flavours at its disposal. If this were made in the Rhône, Robert Parker et al. would be going nuts, amongst other things extolling its longevity. As it is, the price here is almost impossible to understand. Black, red and blue berries with spices from Asia and South America."

About this Wine

VINTAGE SUMMARY
The 2022 growing season followed very similar conditions to 2021, though slightly cooler. There were favourable winter rains and a mild flowering and fruit set period. The cool ripening period took place between late January through to harvest in March. Yields were well balanced, and we were pleased with the fruit ripeness, intensity, freshness, and natural acidity.

WINEMAKING
42% Grenache, 33% Shiraz, 25% Mourvèdre. Each variety handled separately. Destemmed and selectively sorted in the winery. 50% whole berries retained. Wild yeast ferment. Each variety has a unique maceration, however a unifying principle of a very gentle pump over regime, often just wetting the cap, for a minimum of 14 days. Extended maceration for some portions of Grenache. The wine was matured in a mixture of old French oak puncheons and foudre, ceramic eggs and amphora for 11 months.

Winemaker's Notes

VINTAGE SUMMARY

A favourable growing season, with good winter rains, a mild flowering and fruit set period and continued spring rainfall. Vines showed good balance of shoot vigour and moderate berry size. The ripening period that began late January was very cool, with some welcome rainfall in mid-February. The cold nights and mild sunny days in March slowed sugar accumulation, resulting in excellent fruit ripeness and intensity.
