Description

TOP RATED SHIRAZ Halliday Wine Companion 2024 & 97 POINTS - James Halliday, August 2023

Expect a robust symphony of flavours, typically unveiling layers of ripe blackberries and plums. The nose carries a delightful mix of dark fruit with hints of chocolate and spiced notes. On the palate, expect a full-bodied texture with well-integrated tannins and a certain earthiness, underpinned by a gentle acidity that brings balance. The finish is long, echoing with the warmth of vanilla. Yangarra does it again.

YANGARRA, ESTATE VINEYARD, SHIRAZ - BLEWITT SPRINGS - McLAREN VALE'. The bottle has a deep burgundy colour visible through the clear glass, topped with a black screw cap. The main label is cream-coloured with a simple, elegant font. The winery's name 'YANGARRA' is prominent in black, with a smaller 'ESTATE VINEYARD' beneath it. The wine type 'SHIRAZ' is highlighted in bold with the subregion 'BLEWITT SPRINGS' and region 'McLAREN VALE' in smaller print.

"From the Blewitt Springs single-vineyard estate on sand and ironstone soils. It wasn't entirely a surprise that McLaren Vale's first-among-equals winery should have made this gorgeously succulent wine, but I couldn't help but consulting the thesaurus to be sure 'succulent' covered the field. The entry reads: 'juicy, moist, luscious, soft, tender, mouth-watering, appetising, flavoursome, tasty, delicious."

About this Wine

VINTAGE SUMMARY
A favourable growing season, with good winter rains, a mild flowering and fruit set period and continued spring rainfall. Vines showed good balance of shoot vigour and moderate berry size. The ripening period that began late January was very cool, with some welcome rainfall in mid-February. The cold nights and mild sunny days in March slowed sugar accumulation, resulting in excellent fruit ripeness and intensity.

WINEMAKING
Sourced from six blocks within the estate. Approximately 50% on sand, 50% on ironstone. Destemmed and selectively sorted. 50% whole berries. Wild yeast ferment. Open fermenters and on skins for up to 20 days. A gentle maceration principle of wetting the cap and only draining and returning when reductive. No pressings are used in this wine. Ѐlevage on lees in 25% new, remainder 1 to 3 year French oak puncheons for 12 months.
