Winemaker's Notes

The 2023 vintage perfectly suited the style of our Estate Pinot. Pretty red fruits and spice, intensely aromatic, fine tannin and approachable. The long, drawn out and cold growing season lacked the heat and sunlight to give an expression of intense and dark Pinot that we saw in 2022. A style we personally love which shows more elegance than power in the final wine. 100% destemmed fruit, no new oak, blend of Abel, 777, 115 and D5V12 clones. The perfect wine to open any night of the week.

Further Information About this Wine

Scanlon Wines operates in the cool, high-altitude Piccadilly Valley in the Adelaide Hills. The 2023 climate leaned cooler and more drawn out than typical, which suits Pinot Noir’s finesse side. This vintage is less about power, more about texture, perfume and site expression. The family approach (Harry & Justin Scanlon) and their minimal intervention ethos lend authenticity to the wine. Their use of multiple clones (Abel, 777, 115, D5V12) and avoidance of new oak underline a philosophy of clarity over manipulation. This Pinot is quiet in rhetoric but confident in character.

About Scanlon Wines

Scanlon Wines is a father-and-son venture (Justin & Harry) based in the Piccadilly Valley, Adelaide Hills. They grow exclusively estate fruit at high altitude (~600 m) and aim for wines that reflect site and season with minimal intervention. Harry’s winemaking background includes working with Taras Ochota, Ashton Hills, and Louis Schofield; these influences feed into a meticulous, vineyard-focused style. Their goal is clarity, texture, balance and elegance—especially in delicate varieties like Pinot Noir. The 2023 Pinot underscores that philosophy: a cooler vintage that emphasizes perfume and precision more than power. As a rising name in the Hills wine scene, Scanlon is quietly carving its niche through care, character and consistency.

About Adelaide Hills Wine Region

The Adelaide Hills is one of Australia’s premier cool-climate wine regions, with elevations, breezes and southern latitude helping moderate heat while retaining structure. Within it, Piccadilly Valley stands out: perched high with morning mists and cool nights, it nurtures aromatic whites and elegant reds with finesse. Wines from Piccadilly often deliver brightness, clarity and balance rather than muscular power. Its soils vary from sandy loam to clay over granite, contributing subtle mineral and structural components. Growers here push vine density, canopy management and gentle vineyard techniques to coax out varietal detail, not weight. For Pinot Noir, this is near-ideal country—where perfume matters as much as fruit, and texture often defines the wine’s identity.
